This was a unique opportunity for anyone, anywhere across the world, to learn a dance choreographed by Akram, along with specially composed music by Nitin Sawhney.
This moment marked Akram choreographing the 10th and final edition of Big Dance.
Akram and rehearsal directors Jennifer Irons and Jose Agudo worked with a team of dance captains and hundreds of participants to create a work unique to the iconic space of Trafalgar Square, London.
The participants, ranging in age from 14-86 year, from all sorts of backgrounds took the stage on Saturday 2 July 2016 after months of rehearsal and preparation.
A celebration of the body
Akram imagined this piece as a profound and moving experience that celebrates the ritual of connecting with the body, with the support of the powerfully epic music by Nitin Sawhney.
The choreography explores themes such as identity and migration / connection and ritual / hope, aspiration and achievement. We are somehow all connected through these ideas.
Resources
A free set of resources were created to involve people whatever their age, dance experience, ability and location. Dance groups, friends, colleagues would learn the original piece or explore creative ideas to develop their own choreography inspired by Akram’s and using Nitin Sawhney’s music track.
